CHAPTER ELEVEN

“No.”

“Yes,” Audrey insists.

“I’m not going, and that’s that.”

“You are going. You’re not going to let anyone stop you from having fun, and it seems like Elan wants to have some fun—with you,” Audrey adds.

I shrug. “Maybe, but it feels more like friendship.”

Isla rolls her eyes. “That’s how it always starts—the good ones, anyway.”

“Is that how you and Carlos started? I thought it was just all lusty.”

“No, we’ve been friends for a while. There’s always been this attraction, but I knew I didn’t stand a chance because of his ‘rule’.”

I lift a brow. “But you do stand a chance.”

“Now I do, yeah. Did I thank you for that? I can’t remember if I did or not but, omigod, thank you so much!”

“Isla, it didn’t take much. He was already there. He just needed a gentle nudge,” I reply.

“What’s going on there, anyway?” Audrey asks.

Isla smiles so big, if she were in a toothpaste commercial, they’d do that one sparkly star thing. “We’ve been talking and texting a lot. He asked if I was going to be at Steffen’s tomorrow.”

“Hold up,” I interrupt. “Steffen is Brent, correct?” I swear, keeping track of these boys is impossible.

Audrey nods. “Yep, that’s Brent.”

“Okay, cool.” I look at Isla. “Continue, please.”

“I told him we’ll be there.” She sends me a glare. “And we will be there. All of us.”

I shake my head. “No freaking way.”

“Yes, freaking way,” Audrey responds. “There’s no way I’m going to let Ella and Lenny ruin the fun you’re entitled to while you’re here. Besides, you’re so much better than that.”

“What do you mean?” I ask.

She shrugs, flipping through Cosmo. “Just what I said. You’re better than that. You’re no simpering coward who won’t go to events because two people are being asshats.”

I sigh. “Why do you always have to be logical?”

“And right,” Isla adds.

“That too,” I agree.

“Because I’m awesome and you’re my best friend, who is also awesome, and I refuse to let you crawl back into your bookworm hole. We just got you out of there. There’s a whole new world to explore,” Audrey informs me.

“I suppose there is.” I just wish it didn’t come with all the drama.
